In St. Mary’s Churchyard, Axminster, there is a handsome old yew tree, standing on the north-west side of the church, and on the south side is another of more modern growth. This latter was given and planted by Mr Churchwarden Hallet in 1794.
1983: One of the yews was measured by Allen Meredith as 2.83m. (9′ 3”).
2006: One of the yews was measured by Owen Johnson with a girth of 3.33m. (10′ 11”).
It is not clear which yew was measured, though it is assumed to be the one with a known planting date. The planting date of 1794 appears as 1724 in other accounts.
