Tree girth: 351cm

Girth height: at 90cm

Tree sex: male

Date of visit: 24/5/2016

Source of earliest mention: Tim Hills

Notes:

10th February 2003: A male tree NNW of and leaning towards the church. Tall, and girthing 11′ 2” (340cm) at 3′.
24th May 2016: When the church was built in 1751 there was no room for a tree to be planted on south or east sides. It leans considerably and now has ivy on the trunk and high into its branches. Girth was 11′ 8” (356cm) at 3′ – taking off a couple of inches for the ivy would be 11′ 6” (351cm). I also measured at the ground, recording about 12ft.
The girth of this leaning yew suggests that it would have been planted at the time the church was founded. It was noted in 1939 (The King’s England) to be ‘higher than the tower and its branches sweep to the ground’. In Notes and Queries (1850) W.Durrant Cooper reported that this ‘church is decorated on Easter Sunday with yew, evidently as an emblem of Ressurection’.
