Notes:

Rhyl Journal Saturday 6th April 1901: FAMOUS YEW TREE ABLAZE. Dastardly attempts have been made to destroy a thousand-year-old yew tree at Cark-in-Cartmel. The tree is on the Birkley Estate, and is one of the sights of the district. It is said to have been the landmark for vessels coming up Morecambe Bay. The fire was discovered in the evening and was extinguished early. Next morning it was again in flames, and the Cark Fire Brigade put out the fire. Great damage has been done to the yew. Straw was placed in the trunk to make it burn.
