Notes:23rd August 1984 Allen Meredith: “…..as we approached the tree I could clearly see the decayed outer bark of a yew, and then the old trunk of the yew enclosed by a strange looking beech tree which appears to have been around for at least 150 years, large metal straps rusted which the tree now grows over, it is a most extraordinary sight. What is left of the old yew is still quite significanr, part of the trunk is still about twelve feet high.”
October 1997 Tim Hills: Very little remains of the yew planted, according to legend, by St Congar. Recent vandalism means there is even less than shown in the photograph. I have yet to find whether the beech was planted close to the yew or grew inside the yew’s hollow. It is possible that by now all traces of the yew will have gone.
