Notes:

In 1828 a publication called The Visitation! reported that ‘In the churchyard is the tomb of Dr Hooke, author of the Roman History, near which stands a yew tree 27 feet in circumference.’
An article in The Gardener’s Chronicle of 30th May 1874 described this yew as ‘the largest yew referred to by any English writer, said to have been 81 feet in girth.’ This figure has been arrived at by misreading its girth of 27 feet as 27 yards, which converted to feet (27×3) =81. It was nevertheless a substantial tree.
It is not know when this yew was lost.
