Notes:Eight yews leading to the north door were supposedly planted in the early 18th century. Other records show some yews with a planting date of 1760. There are also younger trees whose plating dates are reported to have been documented. Following my visit in 2009 I discovered a 1793 reference to a ‘yew tree which is at the east end of the church’, which at that time had been ‘about thirty years standing’.
The Ancient Tree Inventory has on record (Tree Number 13997) ‘a hollow yew that is known to have once been part of a Yew Avenue planted in 1720. It notes that only three Yews remain of this avenue of which this is the biggest with a girth of 4.10 metres at a height of 20cm.
The photos include an example of bad practice, with dry material stored beneath some of the yews.
