Tree ID: 531
Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m
Tree girth: 490cm
Girth height: at 110cm
Tree sex: male
Date of visit: 28-Sep-98
Source of earliest mention: 1938: The King's England - Arthur Mee
Notes:May 1981 – Allen Meredith: The tree is covered in ivy, most of this I pulled away before measuring. The tree measured 15′ 10” (483cm). What was once described as a little hole, is now quite a large hollow gap measuring 38” across at 4′ and extending all the way up the tree. The single trunk inside the hollow yew measures 37 inches around the girth.
September 1998 – Tim Hills: The tree was a complete circle of growth in the 19th century and the internal stem could only be seen by looking through a gap in the trunk. It is thought that in about the 1950s a section of the tree was removed, revealing the internal stem. This joins to the tree at about 12′. Girth was 15′ 8” (478cm) at 3′ and 15′ 9″ (480cm) at 5′.
2011 – Tim Hills: Girth was 16′ 1” (490cm) at 3′ and 16′ 3” (495cm) at 5′. Girth of the internal stem at 5′ had increased from 3′ 4” in 1998 to 3′ 7” in 2011.
July 2015 – Peter Norton: Girth recorded as 16′ 1” (490cm) at 3′ 6” where two nails mark the height. The internal stem girth was 4′ 2” at 1′.
