Notes:

1862 – Our turf, our stage and our ring by Richard Wright Proctor: On page 34 the author ‘caught more agreeable glimpses of Kersal Cell, its venerable yew tree being now fairly displayed.’
1899 – Report and Proceedings of the Manchester Field Naturalists’ and Arch. Society – vol 39 and 41: ‘The garden at the Cell contains among other very interesting objects, the ruins of a yew tree, so stupendous that two or three centuries ago, when in full vigour, it must have been one of the most remarkable of its kind anywhere near Manchester.’
1912 – ‘A dead yew, under-propped, and chained together so as to preserve the upright position, stands in the grounds of Kersal Cell, Lancashire.’ Source not known.
