King's How

Tree ID: 1286

Yews recorded: Notable

Tree girth: 122cm

Girth height: at 60cm

Tree sex: No data

Date of visit: 1/5/2002

Source of earliest mention: Paul Greenwood

Notes:

The western slopes of the mountain contain wild yews in areas most difficult to access between the 200m and 450m contours. The trees in the photograph are a small dense grove next to the footpath from Rosthwaite on the way to the summit and growing on broken rock with very little soil (talus). Girth of the largest is recorded. Research by Canadian scientist Doug Larson has strongly suggested that small yews in upland areas of Britain may be much older than thought based on girth size alone, especially in areas relatively undisturbed by humans or animals since the last Ice Age.
