Thornythwaite Fell

Tree ID: 5263

Yews recorded: Ancient 5m-7m

Tree girth: 610cm

Girth height: at narrowest

Tree sex: unspecified

Date of visit: 1-Jun-03

Source of earliest mention: 2003: Michael Graham

Notes:

The tree is as seen in the photographs taken in 2003.
In 2024 it was visited by Paul Greenwood and Bryony Smith. It was almost certainly once a solid yew that over many centuries hollowed and split. They recorded a girth of 610 cm (almost exactly 20ft) around the two fragments. Its inaccessibility adds to its exceptionality, and means that nothing has ever been cut from it. The nearby farm is spelt Thorneythwaite, while the fell is spelt Thornythwaite.
