Notes: The present church is possibly of late 11th century origin, of which hardly any remains are to be seen. There were major additions in the 14th century and restoration around 1853. It is possible, although not confirmed, that this replaced an earlier wooden church on the same site, which may have been founded by Saxon or pre-Saxon pig-farmers or ironworkers who travelled through the area around the turn of the 7th century (notes by Peter Norton). The yew grows at the southeast gate. A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 7, reported 'a fine old yew tree' in 1940.
