Notes: The Church Builder (1880) p73: "It stands a little removed from the highway, from which it is part screened by a farmyard cottage, in part by the spreading branches of its own yew. The picturesque wooden porch forms one of the prominent features of the building, and over it spread the friendly branches of the grand old yew." p74: ".........the presence of the old yew: which, from its great age, appears to have stood guardian of an older fabric than the present." A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 7 (1940) records the loss of a yew at this site as follows: 'The site of a large yew, blown down recently, is now occupied by the War Memorial.'
