This area of Bishopswood has a long history of industry with quarrying, lime making and blast furnaces. A large number of Yews are sited on and adjacent to mineral workings associated with the outcrop of Carboniferous Limestone. The larger girthed yews are sited on what appears to be the natural hill slope, the smaller grow on spoil tips.
