Notes: Paul Wood (2017): Along Twitchen Road on the south of the village, on the north side of the road is a property boundary of a landscaped garden belonging to Orchard House. In 1988 Margaret Williams, owner of what was then called Upper House, wrote the following to David Bellamy at the Conservation Foundation: "Upper House tree branches over the road from Clunbury to Twitchen, and has been used for shade and shelter for travellers down the ages. It is said that early in this century that the haberdasher's horse and cart would make rendez-vous in the village there each quarter, and that the buyer of rabbits and poultry likewise each week. When we came to this 'quietest under the sun' village 30 years ago, my daughter made camp fires too near the tree and singed it somewhat. The late snowfall ealry this year settled on the 'hands' of the lower branches and snapped them. A local forester heard the noise and rose from his bed only to see that the road out of the village was blocked by the branches, and kindly mustered a force to move them before knocking us up to say he was just off to work!
