Notes: The church is dated c1290. The yew grows to the south of its porch. A wall plaque informs us that this was Charles Darwin's parish. In Downe Parish records p123/1/10 date 1813-1883 we are informed that "in 1851 that a yew tree was planted on the West side of the church path on November 5th and an iron fence erected to protect it." It is not clear whether this tree still exists.
