Notes: The church where Sydney Smith, eminent divine, essayist, and wit, held the living from 1806 to 1830. It is reported in the Churchman of 1897 that he said of Foston: 'we visited the church, approaching it from the road through a short avenue of most depressing yew trees'. These are clearly seen in the photographs.
