Notes: The tree is on a steep slope above Funtley Dell and the River Meon. The land was part of the county asylum at Knowle which opened in 1852 and closed in the late 1970's. There are a number of yew trees on the land, of which this is the most significant. The tree is about 100m. from a public footpath, but can only be accessed through the owner's house. The tree is also about 100 m. from the River Meon, although it may have been closer in the past. The area was inhabited by a Jutish tribe in the 5th and 6th centuries called Meon Wara who, I once read, worshipped the Yew!
