Notes: The male yew stands east of the old farmhouse, next to a wall boundary in a small enclosure. I was advised that this farm was one of the original farmsteads created by the 'monks' and I can confirm that the oldest farms in Borrowdale were created from the 12th century and remained so until the 16th and the Dissolution. At that time some areas of Borrowdale were parcelled up and sold off into smaller 'yeoman' farms such as around Stonethwaite but essentially the oldest farms remained as they were. These farms include Thorneythwaite, Seatoller, Seathwaite, Yew Tree Farm, High Lodore Farm, Ashness Farm and Grange.
