Notes: c 1940: Arthur Mee's The King's England described Hutton John as "one of the old fortified manor houses of Cumberland. The gardens are charming. There are two Tudor terraces, with eight magnificent yews. For generations they grew in a great hedge, and have been trimmed to their present shape for over a century."
