Notes: The earliest record of a yew at this site is in E.W.Swanton's 1958 The Yew Trees of England. On page 17 he writes "In 1910 Mrs Swanton assisted me in finding and examining an old yew in Jay’s Copse, near Haslemere, that was indicated on the Ordnance map. We found the ruin of a once fine tree. Five parts of the trunk were remaining. Two each about 3ft high were dead; the others, of variable size, were producing new branches. These, in the course of centuries, if left undisturbed, will by natural increase and consequent fusion, produce another veteran. The position of the five parts of the original trunk enabled us to estimate the girth as 17ft. This tree had probably been hollow for a long time, and there was evidence that the interior had been burnt out.” (Swanton’s country notes of 1949)
