Notes: At the junction of Longfield Road and Melliker Lane is a triangle of grass, once the smallest of village greens. In 1907 an 'Ancient Yew Tree' was described as growing on Melliker Green, protected by a fence. A series of photos of the tree can be seen in the Kew Bulletin of that year, Volumes 24-25 - Page 42. It is thought that this is one of those photographs. It shows quite clearly a yew which has lost half of its trunk, with an internal stem in the centre. In 1970 it was reported that a 'Young Yew tree was planted on Melliker Green as an ultimate replacement of the ancient one'.
