Notes: An ancient site on the south of the river Tweed, where St Aedan crossed in 635 a.d. on his mission to evangelise Northumbria which founded Lindisfarne. First stone church was founded here in 830 a.d. and housed the bones of St Ceowulph, a Northumbrian king and later saint. The Norman Bishops of Durham built another larger church nearby in the 12th century.
