Notes: Peter Norton: The original church was built as a chapel of rest to nearby village of Bitton and the earliest reference dates from 1280 and records Bytton cum capella de Oldeland. The chapel was dramatically sited on a well-drained hilltop, not far from the manor house (some interesting yews within the walled garden), and on the edge of the ancient forest of Kingswood. Due to an increase in population Oldland was permitted its own churchyard in 1720. The chapel was demolished in 1829 to prepare for the building of the present church. The engraving is from the 1830 Gentleman's magazine, part II p393, and shows the old chapel and the yew.
