The castle was a residence for over 500 years, but the present ruins are from a comprehensive rebuilding programme begun in 1584. The 1846 Topographical Dictionary noted that there were very fine old yews at this site, but in 1890 Hutchison only recorded details of one of them, stating that it was 'the best of a group of old yews here' with a girth of 11' 2'' at 1', 9' at 3' and a height of 48'.
