Cranborne / Damerham area - Blagdon Hill

Tree ID: 2151

Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m

Tree girth: 419cm

Girth height: at 5cm

Tree sex: female

Date of visit: 10-Dec-05

Source of earliest mention: 2005: Peter Andrews

Notes:

December 2005 – Peter Andrews: Recorded with a girth of 17′ 3” (526cm) at a time when brambles, elder and ivy hampered accuracy. A revisit in 2011 found the ground around the tree cleared of undergrowth and a girth of 16′ 1” (490cm) was recorded. Only part of the old trunk remains and new stems have grown with their branches sweeping across the trackway. These may well be the remnants of a once much larger yew.
February 2015 – Peter Norton: Female yew at SU0545217732 had a girth of 13′ 9” (419cm) close to the ground. Above this the lower bole is very swollen, leading to the large girths recorded in 2005 and 2011. This is probably the first time it has been possible to measure and find a minimum girth figure.
