Notes:

1804 – The Gentleman’s Magazine p832 ‘….two very large old yew trees of about 30ft in circumference.’
February 27th 1984 – Allen Meredith: The largest yew cannot have changed much since 1804, then having a door; the door was obviously on the north side where there is a gap of several feet, a metal cage and several metal rails fill up part of the gap. I climbed inside and examined the hollow shell. There is no obvious inner growth, and any growth at all would have been on the outer shell. The cavity extends to 6 feet across in places. Girths of 30′ 0” (914cm) at 1′ : 29′ 4” (894cm) at 3′ : 28′ 8” (874cm) at 4′. A hollow tree that appears quite healthy.
July 1999 – Tim Hills: A hollow yew with remains of a barrier to prevent entry. This is being swallowed up as new wood is laid down. Girth 29′ 9” (907cm) at 1′.
October 2013 – Peter Norton: Hollow female yew with many major branches removed. Two of the larger branches are banded together by a wire hawser. Girth: 30′ 5” (927cm) at root crown, 29′ 7” (902cm) at 2′ (height marked by nails), 29′ 0” (884cm) at 3′ (height marked by nails).
