1874 – The Penny Post: ‘A yew tree 30 feet in circumference at 4 feet from the ground. West end of the church.’ John Taylor M.A.
1982 – Allen Meredith: ‘Extremely good condition for such an ancient tree, it stands very close to the church. At 3ft from the ground the girth measures 29ft 9ins, at 4ft from the ground the girth measurement is 31 feet.”
1999 – Tim Hills: A gargantuan yew (which we considered to be male, though it has been recorded elsewhere as female) grows metres from the church’s west porch. Its huge girth of 28′ 6” (869cm) at its narrowest close to the ground, expands to 30′ 9″ (937cm) at 3′ and 31′ 6 at 5’. Inside its hollow is a wealth of internal growth.
