October 2010 Dean Loftus and Kathy Pilling: The yew is hollow in places. To the left of the dead sapwood seen in the first photo is a fluted trunk. This is an internal stem, once enclosed inside of what would have been the tree’s original trunk. After another hundred years of sapwood decay it will appear on the outside of the tree. It suggests that the tree’s girth has been larger still.
