Little is known about the yews which were removed. In ‘Picturesque England’ they were described as ‘very ancient yews’ while an account from 1798 states that the gardens were ‘planted with yew trees, many centuries old, whose gnarled and knotted roots may be seen curiously intertwining and displacing the stone edges of the parterres’.
