Source of earliest mention: 1812 History and Antiquities of the county of Hereford - John Duncumb
Notes:1812 – John Duncumb: On the south side of the church is a very ancient yew-tree, of enormous girth. Its hollow trunk is used as a receptacle for rubbish.
9/8/1985 – Allen Meredith: At about 5 feet from the ground, it measures 29′ (884cm) in girth, and at 3′ from the ground about 28′ 6”(869cm).
1998 – Tim Hills: A vast hollow tree south of the church. The space was filled with straw at the time of this visit, when a girth of 26′ 5” (805cm) was recorded between the ground and about 1′ 6”, taping above protruding roots. 28′ 9” (876cm) at 3′ was also recorded, a figure affected by ivy and twiggy growth.
2003 – Tim Hills: Its original trunk, which rises to about 20′, bears the marks of fire or smoke damage.
2014 – Tim Hills: Girth of exactly 27′ (823cm) recorded between the ground and 18”, above prominent roots. Ivy has become excessive and climbs high into the tree’s upper branches. I was told that the vicar would be advised to have this removed. The rubbish stuffed into its vast hollow had been removed.
