The photos show the demise of this once great tree, which grew SW of the church. When I first saw it in 1998 it was struggling to recover from severe fire damage. By 2000 new growth was appearing throughout the tree, both on the many branches rising from its fire blackened bole and also close to the ground. The photo from 2005 shows that recovery was continuing. After the tree’s collapse in 2012 its large stump was left in situ. Some growth from this gave hope that the tree might survive in its new form. However by 2019 the stump has all but disappeared behind brambles and other vegetation.
