Llanfrechfa

Tree ID: 1223

Yews recorded: Notable

Tree girth: 384cm

Girth height: at 90cm

Tree sex: male

Date of visit: 19-Jul-02

Source of earliest mention: 1986: Churchyard yews of Gwent - J.Daryll Evans

Notes:

August 1986 – J.Daryll Evans (Churchyard Yews of Gwent) recorded a girth of 474cm (15′ 7”) at 1m.
July 2002 – Tim Hills: A healthy male yew grows just inside the gate NW of the church. It is a hollow portion of the original tree, with a girth of 11′ 5” (348cm) at 3′.
January 21st 2022 – Tim Hills: Girth of 12′ 7” (384cm) at 3′ recorded. There is no obvious explanation for the tree losing 4′ of girth between 1986 and 2002.
Evans included a photograph in his book which shows the hollow tree looking much the same as when I visited in 2002 and 2022. A recording error seems most likely.
With a girth of under 4m the tree is presently classified as notable. Because it displays veteran characteristics it will in the future be classified as V-con (veteran on account of its condition).
