Notes:

January 1998 – Tim Hills: This stump is found NE of the church. The pieces that remain confirm Meredith’s gazetteer record of 20′ girth. At the time of our first visit it was covered in ivy and brambles. In 2005 we were told the tree’s decline was gradual, its height being reduced in stages. The clearly visible stump reveals it was a tree of two sections. A complete stump remains of one of the parts but there are only hints of the other. Two gentlemen who grew up in the village vouched for its great size, that it was decaying for a long time and declared dead about 10 years ago.
