Tree ID: 584
Yews recorded: Ancient 7m+
Tree girth: 1006cm
Girth height: at 90cm
Tree sex: male
Date of visit: 6-Apr-98
Source of earliest mention: 1798: A second walk through Wales - Richard Warner
Notes:1821 – a circumference of 22ft 6ins.
1998 – Furthest from the church on the east side. As well as the central vertical stem, there are three massive areas of growth around the tree, each dividing into many thick branches.
2008 – Revisiting this tree 10 years later and with more knowledge about the growth patterns of yews, it seemed to me almost certain that the large vertical trunk rising in the centre must have developed internally, while some of the scraps of dead wood on the outside were once part of an outer trunk that encased the internal structure as it developed.
2025 – We do not know what artistic liberties the artist took in the 1821 drawing, which clearly softens all of the the features, but it suggests that a rethink of how this tree developed is necessary.
