Middleton Scriven

Tree ID: 599

Yews recorded: Ancient 7m+

Tree girth: 899cm

Girth height: at narrowest

Tree sex: female

Date of visit: 9-Aug-98

Source of earliest mention: 1939: The King's England - Arthur Mee

Notes:

1980s – Allen Meredith: The female yew is the largest and most interesting. There is a narrow gap at the base of the trunk, just large enough for one person to crawl inside, it is like entering a small cave, the wood of the trunk is so dense that the person inside has to shout to make himself heard by those outside. The outward appearance of the yew appears to be a complete solid structure. It is possible that over the course of the next century fresh growth from inside the bole may seal up the gap at the base, as it appears to have done with the male tree. Girth about 29 feet.
1998 – Tim Hills: The female yew grows closest to the road. Girth was recorded at its narrowest, low on the bole.
