Northenden

Tree ID: 1040

Yews recorded: Lost

Tree girth: 280cm

Girth height: at 90cm

Tree sex: unspecified

Date of visit: 8-Jan-08

Source of earliest mention: 1635: Thomas Mallory diary (Rector)

Notes:

Height of this stump is 8′ 6”. In 1635 the rector Thomas Mallory wrote in his diary that the tree came down in a bad storm. No other mention of the yew has been discovered either before or since that date. Almost 400 years to decay at first seems unlikely, but it is possible that ‘coming down’ referred to the top section of the tree falling to the ground, and that the remainder of the tree lived on in its reduced form for centuries after that.
