Pitney

Tree ID: 4894

Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m

Tree girth: 480cm

Girth height: at 60cm

Tree sex: male

Date of visit: 14-Apr-16

Source of earliest mention: 1946: The Churchyard Yew and Immortality-Cornish

Notes:

April 2016 – Tim Hills: The hollowed out male yew grows only 4 metres from the south porch of the church. Above the hollow at the height of about 6′ grow many thick branches, mostly on the east side of the tree, with a single more separate branch on the west side. A huge branch has been removed where it once must have encroached on the building. In the hollow were several small internal stems. To get an idea of the ground space once covered by this tree I recorded more than 21′ (640cm) . At a narrow point below twiggy growth, at a height of about 2′, a girth of 15′ 9” (480cm) was recorded.
