Silchester

Tree ID: 1211

Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m

Tree girth: 401cm

Girth height: at 60cm

Tree sex: female

Date of visit: 14-Jul-02

Source of earliest mention: 2002 Tim Hills

Notes:

July 2002 – Tim Hills: A hexagonal seat around the yew is beginning to fall into disrepair. Like the Twyford Yew, it has developed bulging roots beneath the seat. Some material has been placed beneath the bench legs to prevent them from harming the roots they now rest upon, but it is not proving effective. From about 10′ grow many upright branches. Low growth has been satisfactorily removed and ivy against the bole has been cut and is dying. It has one of the finest (though incomplete) spreads of branches I have seen and carries a healthy foliage. Girth of 13′ 2” (401cm) recorded at top of seat.
June 2011 – Peter Norton: Two yews grow close to the north porch, one young male and this much larger female. The hexagonal bench has been replaced with a new memorial bench. A girth of 13′ 7” (414cm) at 2′ was recorded at the height where a nail has been previously hammered into the tree. Also 13′ 8” (417cm) at 3′.
