The yew was controversially felled by Swindon Council, who took the decision ‘with huge reluctance, but the unavoidable fact is that its roots were damaging a listed, historic building and there was no other option’. The yew was referred to the press as aged between 800 and 1000 years, however the size of the stump indicated that it was more likely to be in the range 200/250 years.
