March 1999 – Tim Hills: This stump is all that remains of the fine tree seen in the Illustrated London News in 1852 and at around the same time in a painting by John Cart Burgess (1798/1863) held by the British Museum. It is not known when it fell or was felled, but the signs of fire damage visible on the stump suggest that this is what caused the tree to fail.
