The yews here are recorded as numbers 423/424/425/426 on the Tree Register of Ireland’s website. They are known as Walter Raleigh’s yew trees ‘where he smoked tobacco and grew potatoes during his 1st visit to Ireland’ c1590. Such a claim would seem to apply to most of the places Raleigh visited!
The largest yew in Myrtle Grove has a height of 16m and a girth of 2.64m. These were obviously planted to form a yew arbor and would have been regularly trimmed. The process of clipping yew trees regularly is known to slow down girth increase considerably (see Painswick in Gloucestershire).
