Notes: A country estate fortified in various stages since the 11th century but the location has been occupied since the Iron Age and was a religious centre in Roman and Saxon times. It is world famous for the prehistoric White Cattle called Aurochs which still roam wild there. The site contains many yews scattered across the estate as well as this extraordinary ancient specimen on the lawn on the north side of the castle.
