Notes: Peter Norton: A 14th century church. The yew grows 4m from the SW corner of the building. The church is dedicated to The Assumption of Blessed Mary and St Nicholas. Etchingham was one of the first Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, possibly a fortified village settled by Haesta around 475AD, long before the Norman conquest of 1066. The manor was taken over by the Normans, and in 1166 it was left to the De Achyngham family, who took their name from the place. The church we see today was built next to the manor probably in 1358, when pope Innocenti VI directed that a burial ground be consecrated at Etchingham.
