Notes: The 1874 Gardner's Chronicle reported 'a curious spot within the confines of the Forest of Dean, a labyrinth of deep but narrow excavations, made in ancient times to obtain iron ore, abandoned for centuries'. This is an extremely dangerous place and it took 3 visits to find the yew in question. The lower part of the bole was described in the 1874 article as extending 'to nearly the bottom of the excavation, full 30 feet'. This information later led to it being mistakenly recorded in a list of England's largest girthed yews.
