The ridge walk begins very close to the car park and the photos here are typical of this part of the reserve. There is evidence of woodland here as far back as the 16th century. In 2015 Doug Lloyd, the manager of Nupend woodland for the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust says that 'whilst the site is noted as an SSSI for its yew woodland on the ridge and deciduous woodland on the slopes, the trees themselves haven't been previously recorded. It is basically a limestone ridge, the western side of which has been heavily quarried over the centuries and has become in sections a yew dominated woodland. The woodland has a large number of potentially unclassified yew trees (many of which we didn't record-girths vary but are mostly 2.5m-3.5m), but the largest of these is multi stemmed with girth at ground level of 4.2m, an important population for the future'.
