Merdon Castle

Tree ID: 2144

Yews recorded: Ancient 5m-7m

Tree girth: 653cm

Girth height: at 30cm

Tree sex: unspecified

Date of visit: 5-Dec-05

Source of earliest mention: 1865: A handbook for travellers in Surrey, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight-King and Murray

Notes:

Number 2014. Ten metres from 2013 and on the inner slope of the fortification. The measurement of 21′ 5” (653cm) at 1′ (5′ where ground slopes away) misses out its bulging lower bole and a close to the ground measurement of 26′ 2” is a better indication of the presence of this tree. Although it appears solid I found evidence of large hollow spaces. It is tree 4 in Toby Hindson’s Merdon Castle article.
