Northington - old church site

Tree ID: 977

Yews recorded: Notable

Tree girth: 356cm

Girth height: at 60cm

Tree sex: male

Date of visit: 26-Jan-01

Source of earliest mention: 1890: The Yew-Trees of Britain and Ireland (1897) John Lowe

Notes:

January 2001 – Tim Hills: A hollow horse shoe fragment with a piece of stump attached that suggests a larger tree in the past. Girth of 11′ 8” (356cm) at 2′ included the piece of stump.
October 2011 – Peter Norton: A cross marks the location of the demolished church, in a position northeast of the new church. A total of eleven yews are found in its churchyard, ten of these on what was the west perimeter. The largest of these, with a girth of 9′ 8″ (295cm) is third from the southern end. The large male, seen here, grows close to the church outline, and is a hollow horse shoe fragment with a piece of stump attached, suggesting a larger tree in the past. Girth at 1′ was 12′ 7″ ((384cm).
Revisited 27th Feb 2015 when headstones surrounding the tree made remeasurement impossible.
