The first castle was built in the 11th century and the possibility of the oldest yews coming from around that time can be considered. In 2013 they grow in a plantation of Western Hemlock. Approximate grid references of the individual trees are contained in the tree notes. Three significant yews are recorded here, while another unverified yew with a girth of about 5m has been noted by the Ancient Tree Hunt at SO43996600.
